Nursing Education Opportunities in
Mississippi Handbook 2004
PRESS RELEASE
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JACKSON (August 31, 2004) --
The Mississippi
Hospital Association Health
Careers Center went on a mission to cover the nursing field in all
aspects. The Nursing Education Opportunities in Mississippi Handbook was
published by the Mississippi Hospital
Association to provide information with a comprehensive overview of the
many different nursing programs within the state. Basic information is
provided related to practical nursing, associate degree, baccalaureate,
master's and Ph. D. degree programs. Information is included for
individuals interested in a career in nursing to assist them as they begin
their educational preparation as a nurse or to expand their education and
achieve an additional level of nursing preparation. A description of each
level of nursing preparation is provided, along with identification of the
schools which offer that level of educational preparation.
In this information, an executive summary of the Mississippi Competency Model
is included. This model
was developed to enhance the education and practice skills of Mississippi
nurses. The Model identifies three major nursing roles and distinguishes
four levels of nursing care providers. The Mississippi Council of Deans
and Directors of Schools of Nursing is committed to identifying and
preparing a nursing workforce that will meet the health care needs of
Mississippi. This Council, in collaborations with other entities,
continues to work with the Office of Nursing Workforce Redevelopment to
test and refine the Mississippi Competency Model and to prepare a nursing
workforce that will meet the health care needs of Mississippians.

About MHA
Health Career Center:
The MHA Health Careers Center was created by the Mississippi Hospital
Association in response to the shortages in nursing and allied health
careers. These shortages are threatening the delivery of timely and
quality healthcare in Mississippi and must be addressed. The Center
provides resources for individuals interested in health careers and to
hospitals for employee recruitment and retention.
The MHA Health Careers Center is focused on being the primary resource for
students, educators, job seekers and healthcare employers interested in
health care information and occupations in Mississippi. By forming
partnerships with educational institutions, healthcare employers and
healthcare professional organizations, we are working to ensure that the
medical needs of all Mississippians are cared for by a sufficient number
of well-trained professionals.
